What each number means

Understand the difference between margin and markup.

Cost

How much it costs to produce or deliver that product or service — materials, supplies, fees, labor hours. The base of the whole calculation.

Profit margin

Profit as a % of the selling price. With a 30% margin, $30 of every $100 sold is profit — the other $70 covers the cost.

Markup

Profit as a % of the cost — how much you add on top of what you paid. With a 30% markup on a $100 cost, the price becomes $130.

Margin ≠ markup

They use different bases, so they're never the same number: a 50% markup equals a 33.3% margin, not 50%.

Tips about margin and markup

  • Never calculate your margin using only the product's base cost — factor in shipping, card/marketplace fees, taxes, and packaging, or the real profit ends up lower than the number shown here.
  • Markup is more intuitive for pricing ('I add 50% on top of cost'), but margin is the number that actually matters for your bottom line — the two are never the same percentage.
  • Before cutting a price for a promotion, check how much room your margin has — a 20% discount can wipe out most (or all) of the profit for a business running on a thin margin.
  • Margins vary a lot by industry: retail typically runs 10-30%, while services and digital products can reach 60-80% since they carry much less variable cost.
  • Got your margin? Use it in our CAC & LTV Calculator — real LTV should be based on profit, not gross revenue.
